Expert profile
James CALDER
James Calder describes himself as a designer who learned how business really works by building one. With more than two decades of experience in brand, creative problem-solving, and commercial decision-making, his work sits at the intersection of design, strategy, and lived experience.
In 2016, James co-founded a now widely recognised alcohol-free beer brand, helping to establish a new category in the UK market. His role spanned brand creation, product positioning, and navigating the realities of scaling a purpose-led business in a competitive environment.
In 2023, James was diagnosed as autistic and ADHD. This experience reshaped how he approaches work and leadership. He now collaborates with local authorities and organisations to improve understanding of neurodivergence, advising on inclusive practice, communication, and workplace design.
James also serves as a board advisor to a national suicide prevention charity, where he contributes strategic insight and creative perspective to support long-term impact.
Known for his calm, thoughtful approach, James brings clarity to complex challenges and helps teams think differently about how people, systems, and culture connect.
telling James’ Story
James believes that the story behind the work is just as important as the outcomes it creates. Throughout his career, he has learned that success is rarely linear and that the moments of uncertainty, change, and recalibration often shape people more than the achievements themselves.
By sharing his journey, James hopes to offer something more than promotion. He wants to give an honest view of what it takes to build, adapt, and keep going, particularly for those who are still finding their path. He is passionate about helping the next generation of thinkers, makers, and doers see that there is no single route to meaningful work.
James knows that when people see real stories from real lives, it creates permission to imagine different futures for themselves. No two journeys are the same, and that difference is not a weakness. It is often the source of the most original ideas and the strongest contribution.
